Hydrothermal and magmatic systems from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Canary Archipelago
Atlantis 2 is promoted by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME–CSIC) and forms part of the ATLANTIS project (MCIN/AEI/PID2021-124553OB-100). The cruise runs from 22 August to 17 October 2026 aboard the Spanish research vessel R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa, with seafloor exploration supported by Portugal’s ROV Luso through EMEPC.
The programme addresses hydrothermal and magmatic systems from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Canary Archipelago, together with associated mineral deposits and extremophilic ecosystems. Survey work combines multibeam and seismic mapping with ROV dives, fluid and rock sampling, CTD/rosette casts and sediment coring.
