Autrefois, quand on inventait une fonction nouvelle, c'était en vue de quelque but pratique;
aujourd'hui, on les invente tout exprès pour mettre en défaut les raisonnements de nos pères,
et on n'en tirera jamais que cela.

(Henri Poincaré: Science et Méthode)

On the basis of Pascal's studies and his own arguments Leibniz quite rapidly developed
formal analysis in the form in which we now know it. Thas is, in a form specially suitable
to teach analysis by people who do not understand it to people who will never understand it.

(Vladimir Arnold: Huygens and Barrow, Newton and Hooke)

(Umberto Eco: Numero zero)
